A stairlifts allows anyone who is unable to walk or who has difficulty climbing steps to travel up and down stairs safely and effortlessly. For the majority of people this is something that they take for granted, however for anyone with a mobility restriction stairs can be a real challenge.

What are the options?

When a point is reached where using a staircase becomes an insurmountable problem there are only two real options. The first is to move into single story accommodation when climbing and descending stairs is not an issue and the second is to install a stairlift.

How a stairlift works

Firstly, a regular stairlift has a seat that enables its passenger to sit down. The seated passenger is then transported from one level to another in comfort and safety. When not in actual use the chairlift sits at the top or bottom of the stairs and does not cause an obstruction to a person walking up the stairs.

Stairlifts will work on straight and spiral staircases as well as those with a landing and the motion of the stairlift is smooth and jerk free. This means that getting from one floor level to another easy, effortless and safe.

There are a number of alternate stairlift models and specifications and there are numerous differences between each.

A straight stairlift, i.e. one that does not have turns or landings, is much cheaper than one that does. Equally, the variations in chair design and construction, along with different materials and padding, will also influence the cost and complexity of fitting.

Perch stairlifts

An alternative version of the stairlift is the perch stairlift or standing stairlift.

Perch stairlifts are similar to seated stairlifts, however the passenger does not sit, instead he or she stands on a firm platform whilst leaning against the stairlifts back support.

Perch lifts of this type are ideal for anyone who has difficulty sitting, standing or bending their legs.
