Buying Property in Galicia

Many people who visit Galicia quite literally fall in love with the region and a number of those choose to buy a property in one of the four provinces.

The reasons for buying a house in Galicia, or anywhere else in northern Spain for that matter, vary. For some it is a holiday retreat, for others it is a retirement paradise and for a small group it is an investment in a business or small rural hotel. The latter are people who not only hope to live, but also hope to work in the region.

The property buying challenge

Finding an estate agent who understands you and who you understand is the first big challenge when it comes to buying a house in northern Spain. Matters are helped by the fact that the region does have some multilingual Spanish estate agents and there are also some English and German property agents working in Galicia.

However, despite this you should never forget that you are a property buyer in a foreign country and you should, at all times, keep the expression buyer beware in mind.

When it comes to finding an estate agent in Spain the internet is always a good source, but make sure that you check out the credibility of any agent who you decide to instruct.

There are still some cowboys in Spain and regrettably Galicia, with its lack of regulatory control, has more than most other Spanish zones.

For those who do decide to buy a house or property in Galicia (Spain), the house searching and conveyancing, let alone the process of making an offer, can be very daunting. For this reason, buying a house in Galicia is something that should be undertaken with great care and not without the assistance of a reliable and experienced legal advisor. Never make an offer or enter into any kind of written or verbal agreement without first seeking legal advice.
