Rural Hotels in Galicia
Many people who holiday in the region of Galicia want to stay in a rural hotel outside of the main cities like Santiago de Compostela and la Coruna. The appeal of a rural hotel is one of being in the midst of Galicia’s beautiful scenery and this is understandable.
However, if you want to stay in one of these out-of-the-city hotels you need to be careful that your expectations are met and this requires an understanding of - the Spanish hotel classification system and – the expectations of Spanish (not foreign) hotel residents.
Re-set your expectations
The standards and facilities of Spanish hotels can vary dramatically once you leave the big cities and this can work both in your favour and against it. Many small family run rural hotels that are classified as Fondas or Pensiones are of a very high standard and demonstrate the pride of the hotelier. Despite this there are some boarding-house style hotels that offer only the most basic level of accommodation. When this is the case, many Britons and North American may find these standards to be less than their expectations.,/p>
For this reason it is important to get as much information as possible about any small rural hotel that you consider reserving a room in. If you make the reservation through a large hotel company (e.g. the ones that you will find on this site) you should be OK. However, if you decide to go it alone try to get the hotel to send you some current photos of the rooms and to confirm bathroom facilities etc. Most Fondas and Pensiones will be more than happy to do this.
If you follow these common sense approaches and set your expectations accordingly, it should be possible to find a suitable small hotel in a rural and out-of-the-way location that meets your expectations.
