Lugo

Lugo is one of Spain's oldest cities and the original town is enclosed by a seventeen hundred year old Roman wall which remains remarkably intact. This wall is certainly the high point of Lugo's heritage and it is an impressive monument to look at and stand on. You can walk around the old town whilst on this tribute to a past occupation and it offers excellent views of the city, old and new.

Once within Lugo's wall you enter the old town of this provincial capital and one of the first stops for most tourists is the city cathedral, a tall and elegant building. Built of the light coloured granite stone, a hall mark of Galician architecture, this cathedral is as attractive inside as it is out.

To the rear of the cathedral lies the rest of Lugo and although there are no images to match those of the wall and cathedral, there is still plenty to see. Lugo has a number of churches, some museums and a central town square faced by the city hall, a grand and distinctive building. Lugo also has the typical array of Galician cafes and you can exit the old town for the new out of any number of original gates in the Roman wall.

The Lugo province as a whole is large and comprises many towns, a number of which have significant tourist interest. Lugo is also frequented by passing pilgims, most of whom wish to visit the cathedral and pass through the city via one of its holy gates.
